Is love a one in a million spark between all us isolated souls or, if pushed, can anyone fall in love with anyone else?

The Kyrgyz take this idea to extremes by kidnapping a prospective bride in smash & grab raids (it doesn't necessarily matter if you know her or not), and taking the girl them to your parents' house. Pressure by the shame-obsessed villagers and paranoia about the girl's status as a maiden mean the girl's parents almost always force the girl to marry her kidnapper. According to right's workers in Kyrgyzstan, about two thirds of girls meet their husband this way. According to local custom, it's all OK because after the bride has had a child they learn to love their husband.

THE FILM
Ilyas is the shy herder cajoled by his rogeuish friend Talant and overbearing mother to kidnap a girl. A fruitless attempt prowling the streets at night in the local city knocking back vodka after vodka leads to one girl escaping. In the morning they manage to kidnap a girl - Gulzira - from her father's funeral. Gulzira is forced to marry Ilyas. In parallel, the film follows another girl - Guliza - who has also been kidnapped. Her boyfriend Uluk finds out what has happened to his beloved and sets out to get her back but fails. Inspired by Uluk's love, Guliza runs away from her new husband hoping to be with Uluk only to find Uluk indifferent to her. She has been "spoiled". Guliza tries to kill herself but fails and tries once again to be with Uluk, but he ignores her, leaving Guliza to an uncertain future.

"And when she's broken and harnessed, she'll be obedient like a good horse". That's a messed up attitude but it's part of their tradition, illegal or not and they've all become used to it. Be glad you live in a free society where no one can force you to do anything you don't want. Though it would be nice to just pick any woman you want, throw her over your shoulder and take her home haha
