For the exhibition Josiah McElheny presenting as part of the program "Artists and Models" on March 12, 2007 (edited for time).
For the exhibition Projects 84, artist Josiah McElheny created a sculptural installation of crystalline glass, metal, and colored light that drew upon the visionary schemes of Paul Scheerbart, the Berlin poet and novelist, and Bruno Taut, the uncrowned leader of the circle of revolutionary architects that emerged in Berlin after World War I. McElheny's model-scale landscape depicting two structures—an "Alpine Cathedral" and a "City-Crown"—was a critique of the utopian ideals embodied in twentieth-century modernism.

This guy loves to talk about bullshit symbolism instead of just saying this looks good. It has a nice style.

I loved Josh's work when I saw two different pieces this weekend. And while I'm grateful for the illumination provided in this video, the video is a bit long for our TV-generation's attention span.
Gorgeous stuff at the MFA and ICA Boston.

Form Without Shadow: This has caused a lot of dialogue and thought here. Can the rules be bent. You bet. A utopia that can never be built. But Josiah is implying they can be represented. Subversion by recasting. Thusly we have started constructing a VideoResponse called: Form Without Shadow. What intrigues me is how this has become personal. "We are the forms without shadow," I am told. Reflective surfaces. We are now walking through that landscape. The artists speak. -- Tim

if the work was good it could stand on it's own. it wouldn't need a 15 minute lecture
