an 8 or 10 coil for lining, 12 for bigger / mag needles. that's my opinion, you dont want your tattoo machine fluctuating noisily, if it is, your probably going too deep or just not being consistent, and no it doesn't work the same, the more coils there is, the more force there is, hence why why a liner is mostly 8 to 10 coil, basically the more needles there is, the more power needed. for example if you used a 12 coil to line, you would have to move faster to avoid mushing the skin, it happens.

haha you sound like me. i remember bacc in the days i used to use one of those. then i upgraded to tha ones you make with a pen and RC motor from remote control cars. now i use real tattoo guns. lol. so does the 8 coil tattoo machine work good. i use a 10 coil machine that i bkought off of ebay. but i really dont know whats the difference. some people use a 12 coil but i dont know. it probably all works the say yeah. lol

Actually I'm still doing it on practice skin but I plan to start with a tiny tattoo on myself. I bought one of those DVD's from The Gnomon Workshop and it's really great.
When I was 17 I tattooed some people with a shaving machine that we transformed into a tattoo gun by mounting a needle on it. Today I wouldnt do something like that.
