What happened at the end?

@floatinroundmytincan ... and what better way to prove my point than by quoting what richard yates considered the main theme of his novel: "most human beings are inescapably alone, and therein lies their tragedy."

@fnog9 I hate it when people try to reduce complex plots to a life lesson, especially one as ridiculous as "shut up and enjoy what you have" and that wasn't even suggested by the story.

@lovemyselfforever86 if you cannot resolve the inner conflict between responsibility to others and personal want, then yes, you will probably die like April. Going to France was all abotu April. She just didn't like her life, and if April and Frank did go to Frace, the movei would have ended with April leaving Frank for some French douche, and leaving Frank with nothing.

@fnog9 how long have you known about what you stated ? Are you saying that if you don't like your life or change, then you are screwed in the end?

The movie means “life isn’t perfect, but shut up and enjoy what you have”. The movie ends with the dude turning down his hearing aid.It means that a lot of people feel the same inner unhappiness as the Wheelers, but that doesn’t mean everyone is utterly unhappy. April couldn’t deal with her inner struggle, and she died. That is what happens to ANYONE who questions anything too much, and can’t pick a side. You MUST come to terms with whatever life you choose or have or you will destroy yourself.

"I gotta go back to that damn boat..." hehe... I know this is a sad movie and a good one at that, but I always find myself making titanic jokes with this movie. It's like what would have happened if he would have survived. They would have grown to hate each other.
