@ALLERTORLOVER69 The Harrier has a vectored thrust system - a large proportion of the engine thrust can be directed anywhere from straight back to just past (I think about ten degrees) straight down.
It means that if the directional thrust is applied slightly forward but mostly down, pushing the plane up and backwards, while the non-directional component pushes it forwards. The forwards and backwards thrust cancel out and the plane goes straight up.
It's a great plane.

Could this be what people are seeing for the UFO sightings? I have heard lots about a "object floating in a single spot, then flying away forward at incredible speed" hrmmm....
