Electronics giant Sony Corporation is planning a new generation of consumer electronics products using Sun Microsystems technology.

In the deal unveiled Wednesday, new digital Sony appliances like High Definition TV, cable and satellite TV decoders, and internet set-top boxes, like the future versions of its PlayStation, will use Suns Jini and Java embedded technologies.

Sony chose the Sun consumer electronics operating system format over competing Windows CE made by Microsoft Corporation.

Sony said with the Sun software will allow its products to connect directly to the internet for online support.

On Wednesday, Sun Microsystem closed up 7/8 of a point at 113 3/16.

Sony closed up about 3 ½% at 176 3/16.
