Oh yes I know this well. When I went I had a few that were above four..Was put on peridex and I was at 3 or below. I will never miss another dentist appointment again (I also had a root scaling and planing without anesthetic and it was painful).

It's called probing, where dental hygienists measure the depth of your pockets around your teeth. There are 6 probe readings around each tooth, which are recorded on the patient's chart.
The reason for it is to see if there are any unhealthy pockets. 1-3mm pockets are normal, whereas 4mm and more is a sign of disease.
I don't know why the hygienist in this video is taking the probe out repeatedly. In reality what we do is simply go around each tooth fairly quickly.
