the song is about a man who is injured in an industrial accident and then his contractors or employers let him down.

@LeprachaunXL Yes, it was written for a 1994 album that Bruce planned to release but he was told by Jon Landau that it was such a dreadful record, that if Bruce brought it out, coming so soon after the twin critical and commercial mauling of Lucky Town and Human Touch, that it could sink his studio career! It's incredible to believe that Nothing Man is not about 9/11, it's themes seem to be synonymous with that day.

I remember watching 9/11 on TV... I was much younger, my little sister was one year old and we were running around with these little pink doll strollers when my dad called my mum into the living room and she ran in. The looks on their faces were like something I'd never really seen before, this grief and unbelief.. And Bruce notes the 'sky is still, same unbelievable blue...' which is like this chaos and death in the towers but this magnificent blue sky behind it..

Beautiful minimal song, beautiful longing. I learned here that its "about" a 9/11 firefighter's survivor guilt. That makes sense. Up to now, I had a different impression. I had it as being written by a soldier that died at war. The writer is telling his story as if he is alive but he is really dead like Bruce Willis' character in the Sixth Sense. This reminds me of Iron & Wine's version of Love Vigilantes especially the last verse's 'telegram' that compares to the 'hometown paper' here.

Ok I was just listening to this song, and i have always wondered what the lyrics meant in it......so i sat down and i was there and wow....this song has some of the greatest lyrics ever.....it was on The Rising but to my knowledge it was from 1994 (not sure about that but i think that is right) so it has two possible meanings and wow...yeah just an incredible song altogether

I know that the entire album 'The Rising) is about the attacks on 11/11.

Yeah but if it was wrote before that happend, it could have another meaning, eing a possible suicide, but since it was included on The Rising I would say that it could definately be interrupted as something during 9/11

I do agree with that, it could be interpreted as having a different meaning, a bittersweet love lament, I think?
