While there has been improvement in health gains in Australia, the overall health of Indigenous Australians remains poor despite numerous trends in attempting to understand and address the issue.
Research into the social determinants of health and wellbeing has provided a basis for this understanding, however addressing the issue effectively continues to be a challenge.
This presentation will focus on the work of the Empowerment Research Program that aims to explore the concept of empowerment in addressing the social determinants of heath and wellbeing in Indigenous communities.
Empowering people to identify and address their own issues, therefore bringing about positive changes in their lives will be highlighted an important factor in addressing the poor health and wellbeing status of Indigenous Australians.
Professor Yvonne Cadet James
Professor Cadet-James is the Chair of Indigenous Australians Studies at James Cook University. She has an extensive background in health as a registered nurse and midwife and then as an academic focusing on Indigenous health and wellbeing.
