From our base camp at about 10,000', the team heads out at about 2:45am up the Hotlum-Bolam route on the north side of Mt. Shasta. As the sun rose the winds picked up significantly leading both rope teams to be blown down and self-arrest MULTIPLE times! At about 10:30am and less than 200 feet below the summit we began to encounter 60mph+ winds. The team made the decision to turn around. It was a real tough call but as the winds continued to increase we knew we made the right decision. Our SWS Mountain Guides did a great job of helping us weigh the options and ultimately allow us to make the decision. They also said that our team was definitely strong enough to make the summit under normal conditions without any problems. We will return!
Next up-The Hike Out
In June 2010 we set out to climb the Hotlum-Bolam route on Mt. Shasta in California. We weren't able to find much information on the web about this particular route so we created this web video series documenting the trip. We hope this helps other climbers out there.
