Why are so many people saying this is a waste of water? We use 100x this amount just to shower every day and this water is feeding an animals thirst. Im sure every person complaining doesnt maximize their water saving abilities. Cats never drink water bowls completely empty anyways, so we have to dump the dirty water left behind.

This would actually save me some water, because what usually happens is I turn the faucet on for my cat then while shes in there drinking I forget to turn the water off and then the next time i go in there, (sometimes hrs later) I notice that ive left it on. Great idea.

@sixerdoodle cats and dogs prefer running water likes sinks and toilets compared to a bowl that has been sitting all day. water from a toilet and usually the sink is also colder.

This is NOT a waste. This is just brilliant. My cat will not drink from her water bowl and any time you walk by the bathroom she just starts to purr and hops up on the sink and stares at the faucet. I would love to be able to do that to my sink, the only problem is that you have to stay there with her because she usually gets some water up her nose.

Amazing people would criticize THIS video as an example of water waste as the whole point of this video is to show an EFFICIENT way of saving water! The inverse solution would be to ration the water to the cat and I'm sure the same dumb asses would be crying animal abuse.

Cats (like people) prefer aerated water. That's why they love to drink from fountains and sinks. I think this is a marvelous idea!

Um, how do you construct it?

it's an avr microprocessor, an IR distance sensor and a solenoid valve. Google Automatic Cat Faucet, hit the Sixerdoodle Electronics page, there's a couple pages on the assembly w/ circuit diagram and everything

That's really cool, but a huge waste of water...
My cats lay on the bathroom counter top all day. That thing would be running nonstop, lol

Actually, the circuit limits the maximum amount of time the water will run at one time to about 5 minutes. That way if something falls onto the sensor (or a cat sits in the sink) the water should only run for about 5 minutes and stop

My cat will lay in the sink and wait for someone to come in and turn the water on for him. He has a bowl of perfectly good water, yet he loves the faucet stuff.

Mine too, I don't know what it is about sink water that's special. I'd initially built a self filling water bowl for them. (google search "infinite water" should find it), but they still preferred the sink water. Hence this project..
