The Kitsap Saddle Club, Port Orchard, WA held its first Extreme Trail Challenge for beginners in 2011, which the club will continue as an annual event. The course consisted of 20 challenging obstacles. Prizes were awarded by age group. Great rides were turned in by young teens, a young rider on a horse with less than 30 rides, and horses and riders of all experience levels. This video shows the grand championship winning ride of Dannelle Haugen, local dressage instructor, riding Pam Nolf's Icelandic Blessi (Veigar fra Buthodal) in their first extreme trail challenge. They scored 191 out of 200 points. This goes to show you that trail challenges can ridden by riders in any discipline and with any breed. Blessi had never done some of these events before such as drag a barrel or carry a tarp. The day after the event, the obstacle course is available for the public to ride for a small fee. Be sure and check www.thekitsapsaddleclub.org for current events. Competitive Trail is just dressage with scary things!
You can read more about Blessi at his very own blog http://blessiblog.blogspot.com/
This is great to see- a motivator to all us horse owners, Icelandic and otherwise. We should/could work on this sort of precise stuff every ride! Great job by horse and rider.
