Quis est homo is the 5th song of Pergolesis Stabat Mater, a duet. The whole Stabat Mater text comes from a Latin text ca. 1300 attributed to Jacopone da Todi. The selection itself was written by G.B. Pergolesi in the late Baroque era. It is unknown as to what the actual date of composition is but is speculated at being around 1736.
Emili and Elina worked on the whole Stabat Mater out of interest for the beautiful music and decided to do it as a school project within their Bachelor's of Music Degree Program for the Easter of 2008. They recruited the help of their Baroque coach, Christine Burklin as well as 8 classmates to be the string ensemble. In the end they chose not to use an organist for want of an adequate player in the area that could devote enough time to the project. For one year the girls learned what they wanted to do with the music and passed that info on to their ensemble which only had a limited amount of Baroque music experience at the time. No instrumentalists at the time of the recording used Baroque dated instruments.
Their Baroque coach would also sit in on practices and give feedback.
Translation:
What human being would not weep upon seeing the Mother of Christ in such torture? Who would fail to be saddened when observing the faithful Mother sorrowing along with Her Son? For the sins of His people She saw Jesus in torments and subjected to whips.
