In his provocative new book The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein argues that "the digital age stupefies young Americans and jeopardizes our future" by turning out hyper-networked kids who can track each other's every move with ease but are largely ignorant of history, economics, culture, and other subjects he believes are prerequisites for meaningful civic participation.

I like how most of the comments that are in his favor are something along the lines of "Haha! He's talking about everyone except ME!" or, "Well I'm _____teen and I'm not stupid!"
This guy is saying something very unpopular and I'm glad he is getting heard.
However, the argument boils down to 'Kids are dumb because they have too many friends and can never be isolated' which I agree has some merit.
However, it's hard for me to believe that facebook is such a diversion that it makes kids stupid. If it's not Facebook its Nintendo, or Pog or baseball cards or transistor radios. There will always be something. Yes, there is something wrong with our generation but not this
I completely understand the relevance of literary works from the past, but to say that if teachers/professors would instill in to youngsters that "if you don't read these books, you won't be a complete citizen or complete individual." I agree with a lot of where he is coming from, but I also believe that the so coined "digital age" would have an approach that his generation couldn't predict, bringing about new reactions to these situations that couldn't be reached in Mr. Bauerlein's generation.
I don't think anyone really knew what the digital revolution would bring; moreover, there was an interest in creating products for consumer demand. So the consumers are dumb enough to buy gadgets that don't develop them to take charge of their civic responsibilities - the consumer doesn't care.
Bauerlein writes about this dumbest generation as if stupidity is some new phenomena, but it really isn't. There has always been the ruled and the rulers.
@gorazd01 Have you ever actually MET an American? Are you American? I'm going to assume, for the sake of argement, that you're not. I'd like to inform you that yeah, a lot of young Americans are like that, but the rest of us aren't so petty.
