Does the model fly always facing the wind or will it circle or zig zag? Is there any place you can buy a F1E compass or it has to be made from scratch?

Hi,
An F1E glider keeps direction with the help of a compass which is located in the nose. You can set the angular position of a small nose-rudder relatively to this compass.
After the angular position of the rudder is set, it rotates together with the compass (they are on the same shaft)- that is how automatic steering works. This is important because slope wind also blows in one direction, you set the rudder so that the airplane should fly facing the wind.

The competition is very similar to F1A, 5 rounds with 3, 4 or 5 mins of flight time.
A link to a picture about mine (sorry youtube doesn't allow normal linking):

You can see the 12*50 mm AlNiCo magnet rod.

how long does it take 2 build 1?

This depends a lot on its structural complexity. In fact I have never measured it in hours. A simpler one can be built maybe within a month (1-2 hours of work every day), but building a more difficult one can take even a half year.
