Estonia has joined the euro zone, with Prime Minister Andrus Ansip becoming the first person in the country to withdraw euros from a cash machine.

The Baltic state is now the 17th member of the crisis-hit euro club. It has begun the switchover from its former currency, the kroon. Official celebrations have been held in the capital, Tallinn.

Adoption of the euro is a tangible sign of Estonia's successful transition from a former Soviet state, which regained its independence in 1991.

  • @Efteling4Ever The same problem here in Ireland. 1 Pound suddenly turned into 2 EUR, even though our exchange rate was 0.75 pence to 1 EUR.... The main trend I noticed after joining was 'price matching' between Euro countries - this distorted competition which created the rip-off pricing we now see.

  • @Efteling4Ever Although they are propably counting down for the new year ;)

  • @blech143 if u want prices raised then sure, welcome lol.

  • @Efteling4Ever yea its going this way here. or should i say like our chancellor of the exchequer said. euro doesn't make prices raise. the prices raise itself.

  • LOL they're counting down on to the moment their country suddenly becomes twice as expensive..................... I can remember when we joined the Euro. Prices would of course stay the same and of course they didn't and in no time anything costed just as much in Euros as it had costed previously.

  • lol, the alien act was brilliant. :D
