NANAIMO - Rotarians are mobilizing to help send "shelter boxes" to Haiti. The boxes are filled with essential equipment for up to ten people to use while they are displaced.
Shelter boxes are stored in warehouses all over the world. Supplies in each box include everything from a tent for shelter, to sleeping bags for warmth, and materials for cooking.
The rotary club is teaming up with Nanaimo North Town Centre in encouraging people to donate money to buy the shelter boxes. Each one costs $1000 and has enough supplies to last 30 days.
Thousands of shelter boxes have been sent to Haiti's capital Port Au Prince over the past four days. In the next week Nanaimo's Rotarians are hoping the people of Vancouver Island will dig deep into their pockets to help send more.
To donate contact your local rotary club or go to www.rotarynanaimo.org.
