  • I'm really fascinated by this old footage of 1970s Australian TV.. but I've got to say: TV was so dull back then! Not used to news reports that go for longer than 1 minute, or commercials with still photographs of upcoming tv shows. I guess TV these days is an entirely different kettle of fish, designed to keep us entertained rather than informed, every minute of the day.

  • I beg to disagree. I was a kid in the 1970s. TV was a big part of my life back then. The format was less sophisticated compared to what you see today. The 1960s were even better! I'm not into high-tech TV graphics. Even in 1977 I recall being repelled by the high-tech visuals in Star Wars. Who needs that when you can watch 1960s TV programs such as Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, or The Fugitive. I haven't seriously watched TV since the late 1980s. Today I wouldn't touch TV with a barge pole.

  • This 1970s Australian material is rare. I don't know anyone else on YouTube who has uploaded 1970s Australian TV news including original commercials. Very few people owned VCRs back in 1978. This is as good as it gets.

  • You can really see how society has disintegrated since 1978. Poofs now have more rights than normal people.

  • Terrific ARCHIVES !

  • Hmmm, Star Wars blew me away totally, and I was 10 in 77. I loved L.I.S, but it just seemed ridiculously fake , everybody's hair was too perfect. What Lucus has done since is a crime.

  • They tell the whole episode on the Quincey add! why watch it?

  • The visuals from the Sydney opener for "7 National News" were borrowed from Pittsburgh, PA (USA)'s WTAE "4 Action News".

  • It's an offshoot of the American news music package "Where You Belong (Action News is Everywhere)" published by TM Productions. Many local stations around the US including WBAL, WTAE, WTVN, WISN, KOAA, KSTM used the same music package. Another piece of this package was used between 1979 and 1990 by Chilean Canal 13 for its newscasts "Teletrece", "Teletarde" and "Telenoche".

  • You have some iconic news footage in this series. Lets see..the start of the neow famous Sydney mardi gras and the arrest and violence that occurred, the death of a corrupt sydney lord mayor at a time when the city was bursting at the seams with corruption and crime and of course the new pope who didn't last long at all. wow...thank you!

  • I am of the belief that the quality of what passed as Television in the 70's was far better than it is today. We never see the likes of the Sullivans, Prisoner, The Paul Hogan show ever again on Australian Television.

  • Good stuff love to see more of this

  • You're welcome, btvgmv6. Although the tape is 30 years old, the picture quality was very good. U-matic tapes (especially Sony U-matic tapes) are far more durable than EIAJ reel-to-reel tapes. To maximise picture quality, I use the 1-hour HQ record setting when converting from archive tape formats to DVD.
