Nice vid, and to all the dumb fucks out there batoning is how you gather dry wood to make a fire I'm sure people would scavenge bigger chunks of wood as firewood

I was camping out at Sand Island in Honolulu. My brother in law brought his charcoal grill. I brought my wood gasifier stove and cut all my wood with my Tomahawk neck knife... Worked great...

@sprucepantherkmt This was obviously shot in ideal conditions, but I believe batoning is more apropos in a situation where an axe/hatchet is unavailable, and dry kindling/tinder is nowhere to be found. For example if you're out hiking/backpacking and get caught in a rainstorm. Batoning is a good way to get to the dry wood inside a branch/log. Either way, it doesn't hurt to have the know how. Better to know and not need than the reverse. Cheers.

@sprucepantherkmt Sometimes you can't have a large fire. Most of the summer around here there is an open burning ban.

lol y not just throw that would into the fire uve created with kindling and smaller, drier pieces uve scavanged under trees???
rofl batoning is so ridiculous
Also, I put my knife right through a big knot in the wood on that first go, which is why it took so long to make the first split.

what do you think of the lmf II? has it held up well to the batoning and such?

@isthatapotato Sorry for the long delay. I'm sold on the LMF II. It's solidly built, grips well even when wet, holds a good edge and the built in sharpener in the sheath (which is excellent) works great. I've used the knife on a number of outings, and have had no problems with any task, from felling a small sapling, to batoning, to more intricate work like notching out branches for a snare trap. It is a bit bulky for really precise tasks, but I usually carry a small folder as well (SOG TRIDENT)
