Fontana Summit High Skyhawaks Varsity football ends Perris Citrus Hill's 38 game win streak wth a 48-36 victory on the road.

The Fontana Summit High football team played up the David vs. Goliath theme so much this week that SkyHawks coach Tony Barile had a slingshot in his pocket.

The motivational ploy paid off splendidly as Summit upset Perris Citrus Hill, 48-36, in a CIF-Southern Section playoff opener, ending the Hawks' state-best 38-game winning streak.

The Citrus Hill loss also squelches the Hawks' hopes of a third consecutive section title.

"We just couldn't get going," Citrus Hill coach Doug Dubois said. "They jumped on us early, and I give their coaches credit. They did some things we didn't expect, and they have a lot of athletes."

Summit led 22-8 after one quarter, but Citrus Hill (10-1) rallied to within 29-22 at halftime.

Citrus Hill star running back Deontae Cooper (210 yards, three touchdowns) went down with a sprained ankle early in the second half and never returned. Still, the Hawks moved from their 49 to the SkyHawks 2 before a 5-yard penalty moved them back.

Jose Perez then attempted a 24-yard field goal and Donte Deayon blocked it for Summit. Marty Castaneda caught it on the fly for Summit and sped all the way to the Citrus Hill 11 in what turned out to be the key play of the game. Montigo Alford (124 yards, four touchdowns) then went up the middle for the touchdown, and Summit (6-5) led 35-22 with 4:58 left in the third quarter.

"That (Cooper getting injured) was big, and he would have been out there if he could have, but he just couldn't go," Dubois said. "It had to end someday. I give Summit credit. "

Summit coach Barile, slingshot in hand, was jubilant after, telling his team to inform their parents they'd be practicing on Thanksgiving for the first time in school history.

"We played up the David and Goliath thing all week and we came out and slayed them," Barile said. "They had won 38 straight, and we weren't supposed to get close to them. We were supposed to lose by we came together and we pulled it off.
