Ben from JKA England here. A martial arts instructor with as much intellectual insight as Sensei Swain is extremely rare to come by, and his words were incredibly inspirational. I have posted this video onto our club's facebook page for them to watch. I will be testing for my yellow belt next month :)

amazing video! I never practiced karate. But I think, it doesn't matter what kind of martial art you are practicing, the mind and body connection and their development is a lot more important than just learning how to fight other people. It's too bad, that a lot people who's praticing just don't get it.
anyway, I really enjoyed the video, I think I will check out karate someday :)

I started with karate really recently, but I was pushed that way from studying Bushido and the life of the samurai. Now I`m also reading and trying to practice Zen and I believe that karate will help me become a better person in following the virtues of Bushido in my daily life. Being a good man is much more important than being able to kick someone in a fight, in my opinion. Thank you for the inspirational speech, sensei Swain, I shall remember your wise words!

nice explanation, thanks

You are a good man and I am sure a good teacher. I agree with your philosophy. I have been training in Japan for many years in traditional Karate and Kobujutsu. Belt is not important, only your heart and training. Bravo.

Really inspiring video, the whole video has the calm mind set that Karateka look for. I trained from a 14-17 year old and got to 1st Kyu, life then got in the way and I rejoined 4 years ago (after a 12 year break) from where I left off and hopefully will attempt my first dan this year once I feel I'm ready and have done enough time served. Japanese and Filipinos are better when it comes to forms.

@ethanaverelle07
I suppose that depends on the particular skills of the Japanese or Filipino people in question.
