Breaking News! 6-27-11 Nebraska Nuclear Plant Fort Calhoun SWAMPED as Flood Berm Collapses

A berm at a nuclear power plant in Fort Calhoun, Neb., collapsed early Sunday morning, allowing Missouri River flood waters to reach containment buildings and transformers and forcing the shutdown of electrical power.

Now, backup generators are cooling the nuclear material at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station.

according to reports, but the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said cooling of the reactor and spent-fuel pool continued. The Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station 19 miles north of Omaha has been shut since early April for refueling. There's no flood water inside the plant, but water surrounded the auxiliary and containment buildings, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said, according to the Associated Press.

The plant's power supply was cut after water surrounded the main electrical transformers, the AP report said, but emergency generators powered the plant until an off-site power supply was connected Sunday afternoon.
