After getting our fill at Horseshoe Curve on August 8, 1996 we moved to Gallitzin for our first look at the new tunnel we last saw under construction in '94. This TV train was the first eastbound we saw. The C40-8W pair came to a stop just before the bridge, giving us a great angle to record the characteristic GE chug as they started rolling again.

  • Im trying to figure out which scheme looked better on the C40-8Ws..the Conrail Quality paint job that most of the units recieved or the original Conrail job that the 2nd unit had on. Im not really sure

  • @DASCO2136 I am partial to the original Conrail scheme myself. Never did like the way the other scheme made it look like the name of the railroad was 'Conrail Quality'.

  • That's an odd number, 742 for a conrail CW40-8??? Can someone explain that?

  • @troy12n According to the Conrail Cyclopedia, 740-759 were a second order for the LMS fleet that were delivered in the CR scheme. In the summer of '97, they were moved into the regular CR fleet as 6266-6285.

  • Meh, I prefer the sound of EMD :)

  • I'm more of an equal opportunity listener myself, but for those EMD-lovers among us there's always my 'Horseshoe Curve Pusher Start - Part 2' clip. :O)

  • EMD fanboys (foamers). Aren't they quite the annoying, opinionated, and brainless tools?

  • WOW, Thank you so much for sharing this with me Rick my friend, this is so beautiful, I love trains so much. I cannot take my eyes off of this video. 5 stars,

  • Sounds GOOD! I also am partial to an EMD but the chug of a GE is music to my ears as well:).

  • I love the chug of a GE, but nothing beats hearing an EMD lugging 10 minutes before you see it and 10 minutes atfer it passes

  • @shadowknight227 most prefer EMD because the are reliable, if you like the chug try watching ALCo or MLW videos

  • @SD70MAC but a chug is awesome too!!

  • @Tracksider216 well, the chug of a GE is pretty cool. I don't see why people like EMD more. You can't hear the horsepower the way a GE does

  • @troy12n Those locomotives were delivered with split cooling and weighed in at 399,000lbs. The Conrail upper numbered 6200s and the 700s all have larger radiators than previous C40-8W orders. This is a feature that a lot of people dont recognize.

  • Man i love that chuggin sound.
