hello leftout4u, how old were you when you had it done? i need to get it done as having problems urinating and need to get it fixed. but as you were, also feeling a bit scared you could say.

just had the turp done on the 31st of jan still pissing a lil blood, glad i had it done, was never really in much pain, guess i was one of the lucky ones. i can now p like i was 18 again, nice strong stream. just mad i waited so long to have it done.

@leftout4u : I was 59 at the time. Now one year later recovery is complete and I don't need alpha blockers at all. Would I be willing to go through it again? Maybe at gunpoint.

I have a question for the urologist: Do you give your patients a prescription for pain medication post-surgery? Mine did not and boy did I need them for a few days. Thanks, Jim.

Followup to my earlier comments: Now 11 weeks after surgery the pain is completely gone and my flow is much better than before, no delays when trying to start etc. The volume of retention before I have to urinate is slowly increasing too, so this surgery is seeming more and more like it was worthwhile. Just remember, if you choose it, the first few weeks are pretty rough.

How likely is a man to have this procedure if there is no guarantee that prostrate enlargement could reoccur, and there is a possibility of retrograde ejaculation?

As a layperson, would I recommend this surgery? Only if the obstruction from BPH is causing urinary retention to the extent that it is otherwise affecting your health. Use meds such as alpha blockers as long as possible. The postoperative recuperation is too long and too painful, much worse than my shoulder surgery.
p.s., total cost for surgery (urologist, anesthesiologist, hospital, pathology, pharmaceuticals etc.) $20,000 here in Califorinia.
