Germans are a dynamic movement which is quite effective in helping to develop planche pushups. In addition, they are an excellent exercise in their own right.

An essay detailing some basic progressions is available here:

The Xtreme Rings which have been used to build much of this athlete's upper body strength are available here:

  • why is this called "germans"?

  • Because I learned it from the German Jr National Team during a joint training camp between the USA and Germany!

  • What's with the sunnies?

  • Those are prescription sports googles.

  • Oh, I hoping I could get a pair that would give me super-strength too. I don't have a prescription. :P

Would you use these as a progression for planche pushups? I can't hold a planche for more than 2 seconds. Should I attempt these yet?

  • Germans are an excellent intermediate step towards planche pushups as the degree of leg swing that you use can be adjusted to suit your current level of strength. If planche pushups are completely out of your reach; swing the legs up quite vigorously. If you have nearly developed enough strength to make a serious run at planche pushups; swing only hard enough to complete each rep.
