No magic. Its just burning wood. In a wood fire, the fire's heat drives off the gases from the wood and the resin etc. It's the gas that burns, leaving behind the wood solids (including the smoke) So what they are doing here is heating the wood separately to drive off the volatile gases to run in the engine. It's quite a sooty, smutty gas so they have to clean it.
So this is what would happen in a fire except he is separating the heating and burning stages so he can get clean gas.
