I hired Sturdy Home Improvement to replace the 3 layers of shingles with new ones. I asked them how long it would take and the sales man told me two days with a guarantee if not done in two days there is a $2000 refund. I was told they are very professional and there would be no loud music or drinking. I should have piece of mind with their workers and not worry about anything missing from the home. The contract stated that the job site would be kept in a neat and orderly manner, tarps would be used to cover the sides of the home for siding protection and a magnet would be used to pick up all metal such as nails.
They arrived on Friday and by the time I got home from work, they had the old shingles off and the new ones on by 3:00 pm but the lower venting had not been done yet. I asked one of the workers (they were all Hispanic so maybe they dont understand English) if they had to put any plywood up on the garage roof and he said no. Upon entering the garage, I look up at its ceiling and I noticed a new partial sheet of plywood . When I walked by the end of the dumpster , the door was partially opened and this is where i saw the half empty beer bottle. Maybe they just threw the beer bottle into the dumpster and there wasnt any drinking on the job. I guess that is a possibility..but why was there half a bottle?..doesnt seem likely that someone just cleaned their car out because it wouldnt have been sitting in their car half empty. I dont know its just what I found.
At the end of the day, the Job site foreman told me that they had a cleaner to take care of the siding. After they "cleaned up" and left, I walked around the house and noticed a large box that i had used on a trailer was put out and still on the lawn away from the house, the remains of lunch in a bag from Mcdonalds was left on my driveway, and most noticeable the side of my home that was not covered with a tarp and had shingles strewn everywhere, there were still marks from where the shingles had hit the siding.. (you can see them in the video)
The next day (Saturday Dec 10th) when I came home from work the venting still wasnt done .(hmm two days and not done) Monday (Dec12 th) I called the salesman and asked about the refund because the job was not done. I also mentioned about the lack of tarp protection on the siding and the marks. His reply was....refund only covers if shingles dont get put on in that time so no refund. I told him I thought that was very deceiving to lead me to believe that the job takes two days w/ a guarantee but not mentioning that thats only the shingles. This whole experience has been like me saying ,I'll fix your tv in two days or you get some money back,,then I only replace the picture tube but dont connect it to the rest of the tv...come back 2 weeks later hook up some wires and never come back to put the back of the set on..and then tell you the guarantee was just to replace the picture tube and that was done in two days, so no refund sorry ,WTH?
Upon further phone calls to a manager I was told that they would not honor the $2000 refund. When a worker showed up to actually do the lower venting (after about two weeks) I complained to him about the caulking on the chimney and the siding that was not sealed on the garage roof/main roof joint, the box still out on the lawn and the marks on the siding. He redid the siding on the roof (although I dont know if he put any underlayment under it to prevent any water from going under it) recaulked the chimney, and moved the box back next to the house. he didnt clean off any marks. In all fairness, The siding on the grarage/main roof joint might have been cut by the roofer that did the previous third layer ,BUT, it should have been taken care of by the new roofers and not left to allow water to flow under it. My driveway is about four cars long (not big) and in that short span, I picked up almost thirty roofing nail...(see a picture of some of them in the video)so much for the magnet deal.
They showed up to do the job Friday,December 9th 2011. Approximately two weeks later the first worker showed up to do the lower venting. The next day a second worker finished the lower venting. It is now January 25 th 2012 and they have not come back like they said they would to clean off the siding marks. I should've known when the salesperson said this is the price , no haggling, then later came back with a lower price to get the contract something was up. I was very disappointed in Sturdy Home Improvements workmanship, and work ethics. In retrospect, I should've went with Home Depo, they actually had a less expensive bid on the job by about $300.
