An engineer brings down an old 200-foot tall radio tower by cutting the guy wires. This was a planned project and done intentionally.

  • Chicken or the egg? When they put these up- which goes up first- the tower or the guy wire. The tower seems the obvious answer but if it can't stand up without the guy wires....

  • @44032 Normally a few sections of tower are stacked and then a set of guy wires is added. After those are secure, more of the tower is raised and so forth all the way up. All towers can handle a certain height without guy support, but on a tower like this it's not more than about 40 or 50 feet before it gets pretty wobbly.

  • No engineer on earth can bring down a tower by cutting the guys and not have it be destroyed. If someone wants to save an erect tower, it's dismantled by a climbing crew and lowered by crane or gin pole. Cutting a guy is done when the tower needs to be brought down cheaply and quickly.

  • @minivanlegend Nope, it's guy wire. Having been a radio engineer for many years, I am quite sure of this.

  • Yeah the tower was dropped because it was no longer needed and no one could be found to take it. It was quite old - it once held a small FM antenna but that moved off so this tower was no longer needed. Sad, but it happens.

  • @Doily131 nope, its Guy wire

  • Meanwhile in battle field....

  • @Doily131 nope, guide wires are for keeping rollercoasters straight. A guy wire is used for supporting structures.

  • .........isn't is called a guide wire? wtf?

  • Houston we have a problem!

  • If that tower was near Jefferson City, MO, the local hams would have been on that tower like termites on plywood.
