i have heard all the variants of this song - from various great artists of the time.

In my opinion , she has made the song better.

I dont like to influence anyone with my comment since this is my sole and personal opinion, without prejudice to either singers.

My apologies if it has hurt anyones sentiments.

@gullhjertet sure... no doubts about it ...it is their song anyway !!

My perception is that Emmylou has added certain strengths to the song thats missing in the original rendering. Just look at the feelings that she has added to the song ( if you parse the Lyrics with the tune) The Drifters version somehow does'nt match the theme of the song as much as Emmy does.

Both are good with their own merits. I heard Emmy's version recently.
