The "Hotaru no Hikari" song is taken from the traditional Scottish song "Auld Lang Syne" (meaning "Old Long Since"), credited to Rabbie Burns, but actually a traditional poem.
We here in Taiwan sing exactly the same song for graduation ceremony!! Not in Japanese though, but the melody is exactly the same. It's called "鸝歌" here. (which I think might be the influence of the Japanese government decades ago )
And later on the Taiwanese just adopted the melody and rewrite the lyrics in Chinese I guess?
