A new study from the National Academy of Sciences, commissioned and funded by NASA, reveals a grave threat for Earth if a worst-case scenario solar storm does occur. The race is now on for better forecasting abilities, as the next peak in solar activity is expected to come around 2012.

You can't compare this to Y2K. Y2K was based on the fact that computers will shut down because it wasn't designed to handle the year past 2000.  This solar storm in 2012 is very real. Nearly ALL scientist agree that we are going to have a major solar storm in 2012. Problem is no scientist can predict to what degree this will affect our sattelites and power grids. If it is really bad then we are talking about economic disaster that will make Recession look like Picknic.
