@gapeach7355 My friend was lucky enough to see Johnny do a one man show where he sang all his own songs. He spoke of it often as one of the greatest nights he ever spent in the theatre.

@danasteve524 That station was the great WNEW-AM 1130. Jonathan can still be heard on WNYC Sat & Sun at 1pm and also on Sirius

Love this -- I'll be 42 next week, and absolutely love Johnny Mercer's sound. I always remembered hearing him on Johnathan Schwartz's radio program up in northeast NJ - Dad used to always have a certain station on the car radio. My dad passed 3 years ago, and had my second dream with him in in today. Thank you very much for posting this.

Great post!! Txs.
Probably the greatest all-round lyricist and the greatest all-round singer in classic pop history. Nice to see both getting long-overdue critical props this year with the release of the Complete Mercer Lyrics book and the Bing jazz quartet set on Mosaic. I'd seen still photos from this TV special but never found any of the clips till now. Thanks for posting!

Johnny Mercer is (too often) a glaring oversight when we talk about 'The Great American Songbook'... Perhaps it is because he was primarily a lyricist? There are certain phrases from his work that are iconic--- Moon River, Accentuate the Positive. He deserves a recognized place with Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein and Cole Porter.
Thank you for this post--it's a gem!
