If everything I say is a lie, why does the Royal Navy refuse to release the documents regarding the sinking (of the Belgrano)?
...
In response to a freedom of information request from the Guardian, the Royal Navy was less forthcoming.

It ruled that the release of information about the attack, including the rules of engagement, "could have, directly or indirectly, significantly prejudicial consequences for the UK's international relationships and interests".

=======================================
* Formerly a senior civil servant at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Clive Ponting achieved notoriety in July 1984, when he sent two documents to Labour MP, Tam Dalyell, about the sinking of an Argentine naval warship General Belgrano, a key incident in the Falklands War of 1982. The documents revealed that the General Belgrano had been sighted a day earlier than officially reported, and was steaming away from the Royal Navy taskforce, and was outside the exclusion zone, when the cruiser was attacked and sunk.

The government line had been that the Belgrano was threatening British lives when it was sunk. But the document leaked by Ponting indicated it was sailing out of the exclusion zone. Its publication was a huge embarrassment for Lady Thatcher's government.

* Of course! britons will say I lie because of this and that and blahblahblah. Despite all this, Britain admitted that their ships carried nuclear weapons and our former president, Nestor Kirchner, asked Britain to apologize.

Oh no wait! I am lying here too because the english wanted to use those bombs as a table to drink their favoUrite tea, NOT TO NUKE ARGENTINA.

  • Argentina should limit the entry of British citizens and only grant visas to those who study Argentine History and pass an exam at the Argentine Embassy in the UK and sign a legal document in which they agree, accept and understand that the Malvinas belong to Argentina. I can't believe there were thousands (yes, 1000s!) of British immigrants living and working in Argentina last year!

  • @sonnyk88 why do you hate the british so much ?

You just make your self look like a racist bigot

  • Sinking the Belgrano was perfectly acceptable in time of war. The Belgrano could have been legitimately sunk in port, let alone at sea. In fact Argentina was lucky not to have suffered any attacks on the mainland.

Finally (!)....without a treaty between Argentina & the Falklanders, there can never be certainty about the 'status quo'....let us put aside the assumption that South America is divided/weak and rotten with corruption, and it becomes united (helped by Hugo Chavez's box of military tricks from mother Russia), and attacks the Falklands. That is why Britain is commited to defending the Islanders' rights which accounts for why British military strength is so apparent there.

  • @chou2382

Yes, he's right, but it over-simplifies the position. Both sides believe the historic evidence favours them, yet without clarification, who will ever know?

I disagree with what looks like Nazi philosophy (the concept of glorifying strength prevailing over apparent weakness), but actually, 1982 was about putting right what was wrong, and CFK & others are wrong to continue where the Junta left off with a policy of bullying a peaceful self-governing territory.

  • @chou2382

The 'taxi driver' was just a throw away comment, designed to help a wider readership understand the position. It was more to do with contrasting what the politicians were saying by comparison to the man in the street. Despite what you said, which I'm sure is right, I'm nearly sure Argentinians, in general, accept that reality.

That said, Escude has written an excellent paper on the Falklands/Malvinas which more than makes up for that comment, which I'm sure you've probably read.

  • In relation to the war of 82, I have always spoken out against it, but I think that attribut to the British victory in the war an instrument to permanently close the dispute (as suggested by Joseppi, who says that whoever wins war is who gets everything, and who lost has to shut up) is like suppose that having won Argentina the status quo by force would have been something valid. Me viene a la mente el título de un libro que viene al caso.."la fuerza es el derecho de las bestias".

  • Jonny, I do not want to discredit Carlos Escude, is a person who surely knows much about the issue, but when he present the opinion of a taxi driver as something general, he discredits himself. In fact, in Argentina the opinion of the common people (inside which could include the taxi driver) is overwhelmingly in favor of the claim of Argentina.

  • @sonnyk88 "Educational Video" I nearly pissed myself when I saw that
