If everyone had a gun on their person at all times, (save the mentally insane), there would be a lot less crime. If someone wants to hurt you, but they know you have a gun on you, they'll be less likely to attack you. If nobody has a gun, everyone is vulnerable to the few people with guns (because people WILL FIND A WAY to illegally get guns.)

And plus, criminals will just trade in their guns for knives. Which is just more people stabbing each other, because nobody can protect themselves.
