It's an allegory. In Dahomeyan mythology, the snake represents immortality. The lady represents the world which we all want to leave an impression on so that we may be remembered when we die, thus becoming "immortal" in the sense that we're never forgotten. However, the man fails to impress the lady, then calls her a "dyke", representing the inevitability of failure most of us face in life, but in our frustration, we blame the world, refusing to admit that we are at fault for our own failures.
