British socialism isn't Marxism though. It started in the industrial revolution when the corporations trapped workers into poverty and they had no chance of an education or health and safety at work. People such as the Chartists fought for a more fair society. Engels invited Marx to Britain to see what was already going on and then Marx went away to write science fiction stories about workers overthrowing the owners. Britain usually adapts to the time and place than a certain theory with a label
I actually agree with your views for once, despite the aggressive delivery.
However, Benn is undoubtedly a great politician and social commentator and unlike many who hold his views, he can reason in a reasonble and sensible manner. It doesn't matter to me that I disagree with almost all of his ideological views.
Ah yes ,the Empire. Hated by all the middle class lefties like you Tarquin.Get over yourself.Zimbabwe being a great example of a bankrupt basketcase that threw away all the best aspects of its past.
@regvarney I think you are ignorant of how close the miners came to winning, Thatcher offered major concessions to Scargill for the strikes to end (so many she would have been seen as the loser in this senario). Yet Scargill turned them down.
And as for saying the working class are worse off under leftism you are sadly mistaken. Yes they have less taxes but what use is that if they can no longer afford the things the State once provided? Freedom of choice depends on the freedom to choose.
@regvarney Hahaha. Are you serious? You think we shouldn't be ashamed of the Empire? The Empire that expanded the slave trade, killed millions of people through conquest and oppressed millions because of the colour of their skin. I'm not saying the Empire was an entirely horrible thing but it was overwhelmingly so. Also, Mr. Benn has lived in a semi detached terrace for pretty much all of his life. He fought for the miners because of what he believed in, and the strike had a major impact.
The Left don't want to win they fantasise about the 'struggle'.Easy when it's the working class who pay the ultimate price.Posers like you and Benn are the ultimate voyeurs.
He opposed the Falklands because he hates the British army for what it did to his terrorist friends in Ulster.Taking back the Falklands was a reminder of Empire ,something of course Wrong Again Benn would like us all to be ashamed of.He cheered on the miners from his comfortable Holland Park mansion knowing the strike would do nothing for their jobs and the industry at large.,
