Her voice was simply not in this kind of shape in 1985. Believe me, I adore Moffo, but by 1983 she could barely sustain a pitch in her middle register and her voice had little body or focus to it at all. The professional clips of the 1983 Met Centennial are actually kind to her, because in the house she was virtually inaudible.. Fans of Moffo (myself included) suffered with her starting with the ghastly Lucia Met broadcast in 1969.

Her Wiki page says that her 1983 performance at the Met Gala was one of her last public appearances, so maybe she does lip-sync here. Wiki also says that although her voice recovered from her 1974 pyhsical and vocal breakdown (extreme exaustion), her voice recovered. So maybe she sang this for real. I gathered she did not resume her vocal performances out of choice. She always spoke of touring for so many years, and feeling so alone! What a treat this video is for its vocal & visual thril!

I believe this is actually taped in 1990 using Eurodisc recordings from 1971 which she lip-synced to. She was a bit bigger in 1983 for the Metropolitan Opera gala and looked bloated and didn't sing very well but here she looks beautiful and sounds pretty amazing considering her vocal difficulties began in 1968-69. I met her in 1988 at the master classes she gave at the Abraham Goodman House in NYC. She looked wonderful then and signed her autograph on a photo I had for me. She's my favorite!
