There is a moral dilema as I have rarelly seen on TV. The way it is handeled is superb. The Hotchner determination to turn himself onto a vigilante is so unpredictable that even Gideon is took by surprise and is scared to his bones in the spot. The other alternative was to leave this guy in the justice hands and, as the last girl interviewed in the street pointed out: getting him free. So, ¿who was going to be the vigilante in the streets, Hotchner or the unsub?
there's one thing that i hate about Criminal Minds and that is that whenever they show a magnified scope, they use a photography reticle instead of mildot or crosshair reticles.
But there clearly is. It's clear as day. There is smoke inside the apartment. Not to mention if the sniper had shot, you would have heard glass breaking since he was shooting through a closed window.
Hotch shot the guy. You just don't want to believe it.
Pause it right after it switches from the guy dying to Hotch holding the gun. It should be about 0:29.
Pause it as soon as you see Hotch. Then unpause and watch how the smoke clears from around him.
I'm sorry. But it's this video quality. If you watch it on TV there IS smoke.
Hotch shot him. The whole idea of the episode was if they had ever wanted to kill the bad guys. Here, he had his chance. He knew the jury wouldn't convict an insane vigilante... This guy would have walked free and continued killing people.
Hotch knew this, and he took the law into his own hands and shot the guy.
Watch it on the TV... There is smoke from the gun.
Well, look closer. The guy points the gun at Gideon.
He obviously wasn't going to shoot Gideon, but Hotch may not have known that.
But I like to think that he took fate into his own hands, like they talked about earlier in that episode.
The truth is, in New York, a vigilante will likely not be convicted by jury. Especially if he pleads insanity. The unsub was obviously insane. He would have walked and continued to kill.

@SpadeOfAces23 you sort of misunderstood, I'm afraid.
the duy was passing the gun to Gideon, but from the sniper outside, looking through the window it looked as though he was pointing the gun at gideon.
There is no smoke, if you look properly on a better quality screen you will see that.
The sniper shot the guy, Hotch doesnt mistake the bad guys :)

I think Hotch did the right thing.
