Isn't that one of the definitions of acting though?
She was from the silent era and even when she had to speak in films of the time there didn't seem to be any question of her 'faking' it or 'performing'. She FELT the emotions of the person she played even if she didn't approve of character's morals.
Of course there are many actresses from all eras each with their own special gift, so I guess it is a bit narrow sighted to say ONE was the 'greatest'.

i don't think she was the greatest actress, but she could emote emotions and expressions on her face to tell a thousand stories without uttering a single word...for that, i think she was the best, bar none!
