Sad Video: "Lincoln Memorial Lament"

We visited the Lincoln Memorial and stayed for a while. Our expectation was to meditate on the greatness of America, and the heritage passed to us to pass on to our children. We were not disappointed, as the statue of Lincoln is so hauntingly carved, very well maintained, and lit so beautifully at night. However, as we paced and sat meditating, our sight naturally was drawn to the inexcusable state of disrepair and filthiness of this patriotic focal point of history so valued by all who love our Nation. As we noticed the chunks of marble knocked out of the fluted pillars we could not imagine how visitors walking by could possibly cause such damage, and then the image of power equipment (such as a scissors lift, pallet jack, or motorized cart) knocking into the pillars came to mind. As we filmed only a sampling of the neglect and outright abuse, a sense of outrage came over us when we considered the extreme spending and debt mounted by the present and previous administrations. Surely the bureaucracy and red tape could be blamed for this situation, but really no excuses can ever explain why the people's temple has sat neglected and abused less than a mile away from the very politicians who flooded the world with cash bearing the image of the very building they have apparently forgotten.

What do you expect? America is in decline. The disrepair of our memorials and infrastructure is merely a symptom that we have lost our way, and perhaps are on our way toward collapse.

Nothing built by man lasts forever, not even stone and marble monuments...or civilizations. They all eventually fall.
