Summer 2009, Athens, Greece
A short video to document an action by the group Urban Void, within the framework of an exhibition titled "expanded ecologies", organized by the national museum of contemporary art.
(My comment: it was a great walk and I particularly loved doing the scene... where the camera man gets grounded by a poodle!)

The Path. An action for the right to public space.

In the framework of the exhibition with the title Extended Ecologies approaches in an age of crisis, the group Urban Void addresses an open call for participation and proposes the creation of unimpeded passages (by charting a footpath) through the premises of individual institutional properties that compound the block where the National Museum of Contemporary Art is provisionally located.

The action of Urban Void will seek the re-appropriation of the city block delimited by the streets Vassilissis Sophias, Rizari, Vassileos Konstantinou, Vassileos Georgiou and Rigillis. The area comprises properties of an institutional and public character, directly accessible from the street: the national army Officers Club, the War Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (temporarily), the Athens Conservatory, an Archaeological site (Aristotles Lyceum), the Church of St. Nicholas and the Polis Park parking space. This is a juxtaposition of independent public areas of different functions in contact with each other, in which free access and movement, i.e. the public realm, is limited within each individual territory. Crossing among these islands is not possible due to fencing. In the resulting fragmented urban space one encounters homeless people, migrants, skaters, break dancers, students and visitors, alongside environments of sonic serenity and lapses of wilderness. It is a collage of landscapes and people, with many unconnected networks of relationships, emotions and impressions.

The proposed footpath aims at unifying the area by collecting the conflicting forces in a new emotional topography, establishing a new, extended public space and proposing the re-affirmation of a collective way of life.

The group Urban Void invites the public to walk the path on the following three dates:
June 11 and 23, October 1, 2009.
The meeting point is at the exit of the Evangelismos Metro station, on Rigillis St., at 19:00.
NOTICE: Be sure to wear sport shoes and comfortable clothes for the action. Please bring along a notepad, camera and/or any other items you may want to use within the course and context of the action e.g. a musical instrument or a text you may want to read out etc
