So much has changed for the game that became Southpeaks Velvet Assassin. It began its life as a game intended for Xbox and called Sabotage 1943 back in 2003. Then, it was reduced to Sabotage under Gamecock Media with Germanys Replay Studios called on to handle the development duties, which was now going to be targeted to Xbox 360. Last year, Southpeak bought Gamecock, which also brought the title—earlier in the year renamed to Velvet Assassin—to its expanded catalog.

It also had a cool storyline that paid tribute to a real-life female spy during World War II. Violette Szabo was born in France, but grew up in England, and after marrying a French military officer, settled into being a homemaker and mother. Soon after their daughter was born, though, Violettes husband died in battle. It drove her to become a British spy and dedicate herself to avenging her husbands death. She was later captured by the Germans, reportedly interrogated and tortured, then held in a concentration camp until her execution in 1945. She was only 23 at her death.

Its an inspiring story and it offered a lot of potential as a video game—though the final product was criticized by Szabos family as not representative of her real actions. Unfortunately, the game doesnt hold up to its source material, mostly let down by a weak execution on the design and uneven gameplay.

Velvet Assassins main character is Violette Summer, and when the game begins, shes in a coma recovering from serious injuries. Its during this recovery that she reminisces, through her dreams during the coma, about missions she participated in during World War II. These visions are where you, the player, control Violette through her battles infiltrating the Germans. And by infiltration, we mean decimating the troops single-handedly with her trusty knife and any other weapons she can get her hands on.

Most of the combat in Velvet Assassin involves her blade work, because theres just not much in the way of other weaponry to rely on. If you decide to take out enemies with your handgun, for example, you cant waste any shots, because you have very few bullets that you can use across a mission.

And if you cant use guns as your primary method of destruction, you need to rely on the sharp-edged knife and your guile to cut through the guards, so you can complete your objectives. The game will be an unsuccessful journey if you think you can cruise through head-on at high speed, because you wont even get close enough to slash a guard before he shoots you full of holes. To get near enough to a soldier to kill him will require stealthy sneaking through the shadows and slinking up behind an enemy.

Velvet Assassins main source of creativity is in the number of ways that Violette can take out Germans. These range from a basic throat slash, to various back stabs, to some elaborate killer moves with multiple knife flourishes. One involves coming up behind an adversary and stabbing up through the soldiers legs to double him over before plunging the blade between his shoulder blades for the finale.

If you find yourself in a tough situation where you cant sneak up on an enemy, you have an option. Violette can resort to a shot of morphine, which puts her into a bullet-time-like slow motion where everything except for Violette are basically frozen as she rushes in for an elimination. This mode is made that much more dramatic—and reminds us of Violettes real state of being in a bed recuperating, under the healing influence of drugs—is that her appearance during this temporary state changes to her in a flowing nightgown and everything around her being a foggy swirl.
