A wunderbares song from the German band Wir sind helden with subtitles for you non-German speaking WSH-fans out there. This is "Denkmal" or "Monument" in English.

Our (the commenters' and I) English translation:
(Answering machine) You have one new text message. The message reads:

"daub" is a rich & fantastic word, but highly archaic and thus a bit out of place in this context, (FWIW: the last place I saw "daub" in print was Shakespeare's King Richard).

Da sind schon ein paar arge Fehler im Untertitel sorry ... Der Superlativ von bad ist worst und nicht baddest ... und love ist im Englischen artkellos ... um nur mal zwei zu erwähnen ...

Aber großartiges Lied anyway ^^

Ich benutze die amerikanische Street-Slangversion von dem Wort "bad", wo es "bad-badder-baddest" konjugiert wird und eigentlich gut oder "taff" bedeutet. Vielleicht habe ich es falsch interpretiert, aber es ist meine Übersetzung und deswegen auch meine Interpretation von dem Lied.

Aber ich werde bestimmt die artikellose "love" korrigieren. Danke für das Hinweis. =)

Wassn blödsinn. Nimm die Kritik lieber an und mach einen guten subb. Fehler machen alle, nur verleugnen tun es die Deppen.

Natürlich machen alle Fehler und deswegen bin ich auch froh, dass ihr mir Feedback gebt. Aber "baddest" ist (obwohl es offenbar sehr unglaublich klingt) kein Fehler. Dann sollten Worte wie "cool" und "fett" auch falsch sein, wenn sie nicht "kalt" und "dick" bedeuteten.

Ich kann es leider nicht verlinken, aber du kannst unter "bad" auf "merriam-webster punkt com" suchen. Paragraf 10 ist die Bedeutung, die ich in meinen Subs benutze.

Given the ironic context, worst performs the exact same function as schlecht in the original: both in meaning & in sound (consonance). Using baddest or illest here is simply trying too hard: theres not a hint of retro-80s-hip-hop slang anywhere in the original German. The singer isnt wearing her hipness on her sleeve: the entire song is a wry stab a monumental, clichéd love songs,

Denkmal makes me think of Herman's Denkmal, a place that I've been to once or twice when we lived in Krefeld. Was a very impressive monument :) (With a bit of a steep winding road to get there.)

Smear = "beschmieren" and is also better idiomatic, modern English. I also favor "worSt taggerS Smear Slogans on ruinS" since it echoes the consonance of WSHs "SchlechteSten Sprayer dieSer Stadt beSchmieren. "

As for the Sprayer/Tagger controversy: most commenters seem to have missed the fact that this entire song is DRIPPING with irony. Of course she wants lousy taggers: her aim is not
