CEDAR RAPIDS - The travel writer who declared Cedar Rapids as a must-miss place is only semi-serious and is guilty of piling on, according to the man paid to promote the city as a destination.

To disparage Cedar Rapids and then imply that the flood only makes us more unappealing is really piling on, Tim Boyle, president/CEO of the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, said on Tuesday.

Boyle was responding to Peter Greenbergs new book, Dont Go There! The Travel Detectives Essential Guide to the Must-Miss Places of the World.

Greenberg notes the citys City of Five Seasons motto and how it morphed into the City of Five Smells. He says the smells are mostly unpleasant ones coming from the citys ag industries.

He also takes a swipe at the city for the debris left by the June flood and noted the city had to reopen the landfill nicknamed Mount Trashmore to accommodate the tons of debris.

We all know Mr. Greenberg is just trying to sell a book and that he is only semi-serious, Boyle said.

Boyle said he invited Greenberg to visit the city.

Of him, I might also ask, does he think our symphony stinks? Do the parks and green space smell bad? Is he turned off by the aroma of hot dogs at a Kernels game?

  • I guess this guy has never been to Sioux City and drove along I-29 and smelled the Stockyards.

  • This is GREAT! Crsmells.com

  • Very funny and very true.

  • OK, ADM can smell horrible, Quaker can smell strong at times, Penford is horrible, Cedar River Paper I think smells good but does have a strong odor also. Um, anytime there is an above average fish kill around downtown it can smell of dead fish. Mt Trashmore stinks. But with all of that being said, CR is a great city.

  • This guy is an idiot. i live in Cedar Rapids. The General Mills and Quaker factories smell fine cause they make CEREAL. he said to avoid i-380? You can smell an ass factory on highway 30 but that is it. Plus our downtown smells because of the major flooding in June. Is this huy seriously making money by being a dumbass.
