Master Sgt. Alan K. Peterson is the last Vietnam veteran to serve in the North Dakota National Guard. When he retires Nov. 30, 2011, he'll leave a legacy of service to his state and nation. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Kitty Hawk in the Gulf of Tonkin and at Tan Son Nhut Air Base outside of Da Nang, and later enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard and deployed for war again when he traveled to Iraq in 2003. Here, he talks about his experiences in the military.
