Olympus Mons, an extinct volcano on planet Mars, is by far the highest mountain of the Solar System. The animation also shows three hypothetical (*NOT REAL*) astronomical observatories (Like three ESO's Very Large Telescopes) at the rim, which are there for size comparison. This video shows an animation made by ESA/Hubble (M. Kornmesser & L. L. Christensen), and released under an Attribution-Unported 3.0 Creative Commons License. Also included on this video is a very famous picture of this volcano taken by the Viking 1 Mission on June 22 of 1978, courtesy of NASA/JPL. Music by BUTTERFLY TEA -"Ethnic Flavor", released under an Attribution, Non-commercial, Share-alike 3.0 Creative Commons License. NOTE: Olympus Mons lies in the Tharsis region, and has a diameter of 624 km, and has an altitude of 25 km. At the end of the movie you may note three buildings that represent hypothetical future Martian observatories.

  • @BenGoldking

    Are you fucking serious

  • The escarpment cliffs around the edge are 30000 feet high which about the height that an intercontinental jet flies. Look up the next time you see a contrail. Can you imagine cliffs that high?

  • I see Stonehenge like structures on the rim there? splain?

  • looks like a melted asteroid... I mean go check on youtube "slow motion bullet" and watch then it hits something. It melts the way this mountain looks like. :)
