it's actually cardboard paper. i cheated though and used a laser cutter to precisely cut out all the parts. it would have been nearly impossible to cut it accurately by hand.

the gears are cardboard paper. i designed them in CAD, and then had them laser cut.

It would have been really cool if they would have just took the one first shown and made it work without electricity. It could work just like a winmill or waterwheel, and use kinetic enery.

that would be pretty cool to not have to use electricity. it was an indoor project, so my options were kind of limited. good idea though.
