Thats great, in all honesty I haven't listened to This Desert Life for ages, I should be considering I am going to see C.C. in 3 weeks (really pumped). You are spot on with Ollie and Peggy, most of their songs are about breaking up and not being right for each other (they went to high school together). The band disbanded after their relationship ended, then close friends told them that their music was too good to let that get in the way so they reformed and things haven't been better musically.
I'm probably a bigger Counting Crows connaisseur than Pearl Jam. I'm mainly a fan of the whole No Code album for PJ and This Desert Life for CC "Amy Hit The Atmosphere", "Mrs Potter's Lullaby", "Mr Jones"...
Yes it was the form of story-telling that must have appealed to me in the case of AoF. It sounded like a story I was familiar with, although as far as I know it's mostly about the relationship of singer Ollie with the female member Peggy.
you won't there have only been a couple made by director Gemma Lee, with A.O.F's budget there probably won't be many (if any) more made unfortunately :-(
that is unbelievable! You must be my music twin! I am a massive fan of both Counting Crows and Pearl Jam, I too get so much out of "lyrical story telling" something where u get such a vivid picture of the story being told (and the emotion brought with it). For the record my fave songs by Pearl Jam would be "Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town", "Black", "Corduroy" and by Counting Crows "Anna Begins", "Round Here" and pretty much the whole August & Everything After album!
Second Storey is definitely underrated, simply because it sounds like one of those epic albums that stands by itself instead of just being a collection of good songs. It seems to tell a story (at least to me) that I find so rarely in my favourite albums bar maybe one or two Counting Crows or Pearl Jam albums.
I can imagine someone picking it up in a decade or so and wonder how it never became a cult album.
It's definitely in the league of some of the best indie bands' albums.
Thanks for your reply. Maybe I need to give the album a listen again (I have to admit that I only own their first two albums and not Runaways) but there are a number of reasons I don't like the direction they've taken in the last album: a bit too upbeat (they did miserable quite well), I'm not sure about the production quality on these new tracks.
gorgeous music
