Sony is now going head-to-head-to-head with Nikon and Canon in the growing DSLR market. Its new A900 offers a whopping 24 megapixels and can shoot clear pictures in low-light settings. Digital Journal TV takes you inside Sony's newest heavy hitter.

Digital Journal TV — Sony is going head-to-head-to-head with Nikon and Canon for DSLR supremacy. Its new DSLR A900 offers a whopping 24.6 megapixels and can shoot clear pictures in low-light settings. Digital Journal TV takes you inside the hottest camera of the year.

With a full-frame CMOS sensor, Sony's A900 is a digital SLR camera bound to gain attention this year. It's got souped-up technology that should undoubtedly excite photographers: dual Bionz image processors, anti-blur image stabilization; a 9-point AF sensor with 10 assist points, a high-speed shutter, and a magnesium body to make it a rugged and reliable device.

Available for $3,000 (body only), the A900 doesn't come with any lenses, but it launched with one of the more impressive lenses available, the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T F2.8 lens ($1,800). Also, this successor to the A700 can work with most Konica Minolta lenses dating back to 1985.

The A900 is in another class, Sony officials say. The A900 fits in a "category that will have lots of prosumers but will also appeal to those in the traditional film side," says David Oyagi, product manager for Alpha brand at Sony.

So what's so special about this new entrant in the DSLR market, and is it worth the hype? Check out this episode of Digital Journal TV for our hands-on review of the best and worst of the A900.

  • i dont think DSLR's should come with HD video, nor live view, i feel it takes out the beauty of photography, but its just my opinion..

  • Who cares about video. Medium format cameras don't do video. D3x doesn't do video. A900 doesn't do video. Video is just a nice bonus extra. Professionals that shoot video choose 5DMK2 for video as paying 2k for a rig rather than 30k for video camera but to do high quality video you need follow focus rig and dolly and etc. Those extras add up to thousands of dollars extra.

  • @Metriohn I must say, I agree... my camera (Sony Alpha a560) has video and I use it since it's there, but just for my Youtube videos, but I actually prefer a DSLR camera separate and a video camera separate. To me, SLR's weren't made for video, they just don't seem all that great. It's a confusion on who photographers are and who are cinematographers.

  • @mmercelis Isn't it better to have the feature? It's got it there, and it's good at it. It isn't built for joe average, and people might buy it for its DSLR specs but for video capabilities also. Saying it should be for 'people who love photography' is just snobbery.

  • @burgos041 He said paparazzi, not professional photographers.

  • @Metriohn DSLR's are more and more becoming the go to for video recording for Independent companies and even full companies, and why not have live view? I agree, I usually use the visors, but I do like to view my images after taking it, and I view myself as a competent Artist, as well as photographer, It just depends on your views.

  • @burgos041 CAPTAIN AMERICAN SHOTS WITH CANON 5D MARK 2, D.S.R.L AND NOW WHO HAVE THE STUPID COMMENT ABOUT BIG COMPANIAS WITH BIG CAMERAS??

  • Ide probably break my computer if i tried uploading a 24 MP raw file :)

  • The D3 and the 1D also don't have a popup flash, and I don't think HD video should be a feature for a DSLR. If you want to make a video, you buy a camera. DSLR camera's are for poeples who loves photography.

  • @Metriohn no..doesnt change anything when you see a photo you can bever tell that :)

  • ITS THE =3 PORN SONG!
