McGoohan plays an obsessive priest who tries to get his congregation to walk to their death in the mountains for their own good. They turn on him, stone him and leave him for dead just before this scene. And award-winning theatrical performance.
Good grief, what an odd story. "An obsessive priest who tries to get his congregation to walk to their death in the mountains for their own good"??? It makes McGoohan's awesome acting even more outstanding though - I didn't have a clue what was going on but I felt every emotion he was going through, painfully strong. What film is this from?
I wouldnt go as far as saying brand was a saint, however, bernard shaw pretty much hit the nail on the head in his analysis of the character. It seems to me that it is actually patrick mcgoohan who doesn't know what he's on about.
"Brand dies a saint," wrote Bernard Shaw, "having caused more intense suffering by his saintliness than the most talented sinner could possibly have done with twice his opportunities."
Patrick McGoohan remarked to the effect that Shaw didn't know what he was talking about :-)
McGoohan...always brilliant!
